Wisconsin ACS Important Announcements

Posted on March 31, 2017 at 2:00 PM

Hello from the Wisconsin ACS Local Section,

We have some important and timely announcements to share with all members. Please react and respond—we would love to hear from you!

  • Support Science--Join March for Science. First, we call your attention to the March for Science, and in particular what’s happening locally: March for Science - Madison. It will take place on Earth Day 2017, April 22, from 1 to 5 p.m. It will go from Madison’s James Madison Park to UW Science Hall/Library Mall. More information about the event in Madison is at https://www.facebook.com/events/1763770130603220/ . We hope you will join fellow ACS Local Section members so we can strengthen our efforts by participating as a group. Information about where and when we will gather as well as the availability of signs will be posted (and updated) on our web site http://wisconsin.sites.acs.org/ as soon as it is available. Join in: support science at a time when it needs support from everyone!
  • Judges needed. Volunteer! The UW-Madison Chemistry Department will hold its annual undergraduate poster session on Friday, April 28, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Shain Atrium. We are specifically looking for judges from industry or research labs who would be willing to evaluate 4 to 5 posters during the event. Your reward is the opportunity to interact with enthusiastic students, their research teams, and mentors; to share your own knowledge and experience with these budding chemists; and to learn about what’s going on in some of the UW-Madison research labs. Interested? Contact Cheri Barta, Undergraduate Research Director at cbarta@chem.wisc.edu. We hope to hear from you and to welcome you on April 28!

  • Act Quickly: Excellence Awards for Students: All undergraduate students are eligible to compete for the Local Section’s Annual Awards for Excellence in Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical chemistry. This includes students at Edgewood College, Madison College, and UW-Platteville as well as those at UW-Madison. The awards of $300 are based on performance on the relevant ACS Standardized Exams. The exams are scheduled to be given at UW-Madison on April 7, 8, and 9. For details and complete information, contact Matt Bowman, bowman@chem.wisc.edu.
  • Student Poster Exchange. The ACS Wisconsin Local Section has been awarded a Leadership Institute Mini-Grant, entitled "Partnering with Neighboring Local Sections". This grant will support the initiative jointly proposed by four local sections (Wisconsin, Upper Peninsula, La Crosse-Winona, and NE Wisconsin) to organize a poster exchange event enabling chemistry students to (a) develop experience evaluating scientific posters and (b) obtain peers’ and senior colleagues’ critique of their posters. Student posters will be circulated in a coordinated fashion among different institutions for peer review. A virtual summit among the participants will follow, then presentation at a regional or national ACS Meeting.
  • Summer Social Event:  We are planning a social event for this summer that we hope will attract a wide audience that includes our members from local industries, businesses, and research labs as well as those from academia. Right now it is a toss-up between having (a) a TED Talk where selected ACS members could give lightning talks on a topic of interest to a broad audience and (b) having a talk with a broad appeal followed by a social, possibly a cruise on Lake Mendota. Since there is not yet a consensus, we are open to hearing your ideas for version (c). While there is no specific date, the aim is for mid-July, so mark your calendar now and expect to hear more.
  • Coming: Membership Survey: Here is a chance to make your voice heard. A Local Section membership survey will soon arrive in your email. We are interested in finding out more about what the local ACS section can do for all its members. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey and provide any suggestions, ideas, or comments for programming or other functions that you would like to see the local section provide. Of course, if there is something that we are doing that you really like or depend on, feel free to let us know that as well. We need your input, and hope you will encourage others to do so. Let us hear from you!
